Sailing with Holland America Zaandam: The perfect cruise for Alaska getaways

Looking to go on an Alaska cruise one day? Look no further than sailing with Holland America Zaandam!

My husband, Cecilio, and I sailed on Holland America Zaandam from Vancouver for 7 days in and around Alaska. We got to explore Juneau and see the Mendenhall Glacier, ride the White Pass Summit train from Skagway, sail deep into Glacier Bay National Park, and sample fresh salmon at the markets in Ketchikan.

Surrounded by jaw-dropping glaciers, chilly temperatures, unique wildlife, and rich Yukon history, there’s no better way to spend the summer than on an Alaska cruise.

If an Alaska cruise is on your bucket list, stick around, as I will share why you should sail on Holland America Zaandam (or any of the Holland America Line ships).

I will also share what she has to offer; this includes the staterooms, food and drink, entertainment, port excursions, sea day activities (including sailing through Glacier Bay National Park), and lectures (which is what Holland America is well-known for).

Holland America Zaandam Review

Overview

Holland America Line (HAL) is a mid-sized and mid-priced ship, catering to an older and more refined crowd. HAL is owned by Carnival Corporation, which also owns and operates Carnival (check out my review on Carnival Radiance), Princess, Cunard, P&O Cruises, and Seabourn.

HAL sails out of the US, Canada, Europe, Asia, Australia, and some parts of South America and Africa.

For Alaska cruises, Holland America Zaandam sails out of Vancouver and Anchorage.

A smaller and more intimate ship than the likes of Carnival, Princess, and Royal Caribbean, she has a maximum occupancy of 1,432 passengers and 615 crew members.

🚢 If it’s your first time cruising in Alaska, consider sailing with Holland America Zaandam through the Inside Passage!

Itinerary for 7-Day Alaska Cruise

The standard itinerary for sailing on Holland America Zaandam for the 7-day Alaska cruise through the Inside Passage will have three port days in Juneau, Skagway, and Ketchikan, and three sea days (one of which sails through Glacier Bay National Park). You will be embarking and disembarking from Vancouver. Here is the itinerary:

  • Day 1: Sea Day (sail through Inside Passage)
  • Day 2: Sail through Tracy Arm Fjord before docking in Juneau
  • Day 3: Skagway

  • Day 5: Ketchikan
  • Day 6: Sea Day (sail through Inside Passage)

Staterooms

Holland America Zaandam has 10 decks and 716 staterooms for passengers. There are 5 types of staterooms:

  • Interior: The most affordable room, best if you are just there to sleep
  • Ocean View: More spacious than the interior room, and more affordable than the verandah but perfect if you still want to see the seas
  • Verandah (balcony): The most popular room, and the one I would recommend most for Alaska cruises, so you have a better view of the wildlife and glaciers
  • Vista Suite: This room can fit up to 3 people, with an adjacent room, and of course, the balcony. It also has a whirlpool bath!
  • Neptune Suite: Zaandam’s most expensive room that fits up to 4 people, with an adjacent room, and has a whirlpool bath and a balcony. Those who stay in the Neptune Suite also have private lounge access.

Originally, when I booked this cruise, I booked the interior room since it was the cheapest. But as time got closer, I started getting emails from HAL to upgrade to the Ocean View for a great deal. I bit the bullet and called the agent to upgrade to the Ocean View for $79, which ended up being much cheaper than if I booked Ocean View immediately.

I was a little bit worried when the agent said that the window was going to be obstructed. But when we walked into our room, we had a full, unobstructed window right behind our bed. I was SO glad I made the upgrade. To me, a big part of the cruise experience is being able to watch the sea and the waves pass by as you rest in your room.

We had two double beds wedged into a king-sized bed against the window, and a fairly large seating area. We had 3 decent-sized closets and a bunch of drawers to store our clean and dirty clothes, luggage, and shoes. I also appreciate the little things that HAL offers in the closets, like umbrellas and ponchos (even though it didn’t rain during our time in Alaska).

Food & Drink

Let’s talk about the #1 activity people do on cruises: eat and eat until they waddle and can’t walk. Yup, that was me and Cecilio too. I ate more than I ever would’ve on a land vacation. Since most food was included, Cecilio wanted to get his money’s worth, and I followed suit (my doctor’s increasing my prednisone dosage certainly didn’t help).

While there were fewer options on Holland America Zaandam than on Carnival, almost all the food was included, including room service (save for a few specialty items).

Here are some of the food and drink options on Holland America Zaandam:

The Buffet

The buffet was pretty good…on the first day. After a while, I did get sick of it. Some of the food was hit or miss, and the pizza was certainly a miss. I wanted to like it, but it was a letdown. The crust was too thick and soft, and it was too cheesy with not enough sauce.

They do have a pretty good breakfast, I’ll give it that.

Now, I will say that the one area where the buffet shines is the dessert. I kept getting seconds (and thirds) of desserts such as ice cream, cake, cupcakes, tiramisu, tarts, and Holland America’s signature bread pudding. They were decadent, but not overly so!

desserts in the buffet on Holland America Zaandam. Shown are cake rolls, cupcakes, strawberry cream tarts, and angel cake
There were a lot more desserts than what was shown!

The buffet on Holland America Line is on the 8th deck, right next to the lido and sea view decks.

In defense of the buffet, on some days, they will serve specific dishes. Like they served steak on the first night for dinner, and seafood boil on the second-to-last night.

I will say that the sushi from the buffet was pretty good!

Main Dining Hall

I absolutely loved the main dining hall. It’s much less crowded than the buffet, and you get better views of the sea. We saw a little bit of whale fins; the crew kept joking to us that the more we ordered drinks, the more likely we were to see the whales!

Sure, the food is still made in the same buffet as the buffet, but it is prepared better, and you get that plated, fine dining experience. Also, the menu each day is different!

We had delicious appetizers like escargot marinated with butter and olive oil, calamari, and Caesar salad. Dinner consisted of creamy seafood pasta and fresh fish with sauteed vegetables. We also had mouthwatering desserts like crème brûlée and baked Alaska.

For formal nights, the dress code is a little stricter than Carnival’s; Cecilio and a few other passengers got turned away for wearing shorts and had to change into pants. They’re more lax about that in Carnival during their formal nights.

You can get away with a t-shirt and shorts during their casual nights, as long as you don’t show up shirtless or in a bathing suit!

🚢🍝 Consider yourself a foodie? You can have delicious, gourmet meals for breakfast or lunch at the main dining hall when you book with Holland America Zaandam!

Dive-in Burger

I don’t know what it is about cruises and their burgers, but they have some of the most succulent, mouthwatering ones. I actually prefer cruise burgers over pizzas (which tend to get the spotlight), and Dive-In Burger is no exception. During our time in Carnival, I LOVED Guy’s Burger Joint. Similar to Guy’s, Zaandam’s Dive-In Burger is located in the lido deck next to the pool.

They served more varieties of burgers, with buns crispy on the edges, melted cheese, and thick patties. They also served hot dogs, which were just as delicious. The fries were also crispy, and you could also order them topped with cheese, buffalo sauce, or their secret sauce.

I actually preferred having lunch at the Dive-In Burger to the buffet!

The bars

Holland America Zaandam has a variety of bars where you can order a drink, listen to live music, or partake in fun activities. There were two bars that hosted Happy Hour for 50% off cocktails: Ocean Bar and Crow’s Nest Bar. I appreciated this because we didn’t get the drink package, and that was a great way to save some money.

Below are the bars in Zaandam:

Crow’s Nest Bar & Cafe

Located on the 9th deck, Crow’s Nest is a popular spot to relax, see the views, and have a drink or two. Crow’s Nest also hosts the Orange Party on all HAL ships, since it has a dance floor big enough for it.

During our sea day sailing through Glacier Bay National Park, Crow’s Nest had some of the best seats and views of the glaciers. Park rangers had their own table, giving out information about the glaciers and the wildlife. There was even a mini gift shop, and Cecilio bought a puffin plush!

Crow’s Nest also hosts trivia hours and line dancing classes (especially for the Orange Party).

The only thing I didn’t like was that their coffee machine was broken, since they also served specialty coffees and I wanted to try some.

Ocean Bar

Ocean Bar was also another fun spot, although much smaller than Crow’s Nest, and it can get crowded. So I’d recommend coming early to grab a booth (which are more comfortable than the small tables and chairs), especially during Happy Hour. The staff will also go around and serve a glass jar of salted peanuts to go along with our drinks.

Poolside Bars

Both ends of the 8th deck (and outside the buffet) have pools and bars to accompany them. They serve the typical tropical poolside drinks like Mai Tais and margaritas along with beer and wine.

During our sea day sailing through Glacier Bay, there was a table with a crew member serving Alaska glacier-themed hot cocktails. And you could get them at a discount if you purchased a mug.

Explorer’s Lounge

More of a relaxing setting, Explorer’s Lounge has ample tables and chairs where you can sip a cocktail or glass of wine and read a book or have deep conversations.

MIX

MIX is more upscale than the other bars, offering only champagne, martinis, spirits, and ales. I’ll be honest, MIX didn’t appeal to me since it gave me a stuffy vibe, also they didn’t offer a Happy Hour 😂

Specialty Restaurants

If you get sick of the buffet or Main Dining Hall during your 7 days on Holland America Zaandam (and you will be, trust me), you can make reservations for specialty dining. They don’t have standalone restaurants as they are located in the buffet (especially since Zaandam is a small ship), but they are sectioned off for those who made reservations.

Zaandam’s specialty dining includes the following:

Prices for Pinnacle Grill and Canaletto are half off for children 12 or under, or free if they order from the kids menu.

Room Service

For days you didn’t feel like battling the buffet lines, you could order room service, since it’s included and available 24/7. Cecilio and I ordered room service for breakfast on the day we sailed through Tracy Arm Fjord before docking in Juneau, so we had to mark our menu the night before and put it in front of the door. The breakfast menu was pretty simple and consisted of eggs, granola, fruit, bacon, and pancakes; they also had other fancier dishes that you would need to pay for.

Behind the plate of eggs and meats are two coffees, a glass of milk and cream. To the right, there is a bowl of fruit featuring watermelon, bananas and blueberries.

Exploration’s Cafe

If you’re looking for a morning or afternoon pick-me-up and the weak buffet coffee isn’t doing it for you, head over to Exploration’s Cafe on the 5th deck next to the library and the game room. They offer a variety of drinks like cold brew, lattes, mocha, and teas. Heads up, though, most of them are in a can. It’s still better than the buffet coffee!

At night, Exploration’s Cafe serves coffee martinis.

Unfortunately, unless you purchase the drink package, you will need to pay out of pocket for the drinks.

Entertainment

Sailaway party

Let’s be honest; no one does sailaway parties like Carnival, so I had pretty low expectations for Holland America Zaandam. That said, the sailaway party was pretty fun, with 5 staff members dancing to 80s music and hyping the crowd to do the Cha Cha Slide.

It was lovely being able to sail under the Lion’s Gate Bridge on one side and saying goodbye to Vancouver for a week.

During the sailaway party, there was a table with staff offering champagne to passengers to kick off the week-long journey to Alaska! Of course, I made Cecilio go in line to get me a glass 😂

Performances

Holland America Zaandam houses the World Stage on the 5th deck, where they have performances every night. They’re fun to watch at least once, if not to admire the talent of the singers and dancers. Cecilio and I watched this number where these singers belted out hits from Justin Timberlake, Taylor Swift, and Adele. I was in awe of the dancers’ grace, strength, and ability to endure hours of performing with a smile on their faces.

Please don’t come into a HAL ship expecting extravagant ice skating or aqua performances like Royal Caribbean has. HAL’s ships are too small for that, and it’s just nice to catch a show after dinner when it gets quieter at night.

Lectures

HAL is known for its extensive lectures on board about the destination they’re sailing to. This is especially true for their Alaska cruises.

The lectures take place on the World Stage, so I highly recommend going to at least one. We attended a lecture about glaciers the night before we sailed through Glacier Bay National Park (the big day!). It was quite fascinating to learn how the glaciers were formed over time.

Pools and jacuzzis

Holland America Zaandam has two pools on both sides of the 8th deck: the sea view and the lido area. The sea view pool is out in the open and is not heated (there is even a sign that says so). This pool is for you if you want to do a cold plunge…if you dare.

The lido side has a retractable roof, so you basically have an indoor pool. But sometimes it doesn’t close all the way. Cecilio and I swam a couple of times, and I found that the temperature was pretty inconsistent. It was fairly warm on the first night, but when we had a morning swim on the day we docked in Ketchikan, I found it a little chilly (even though Ketchikan ended up being 75°F that day!).

There were two jacuzzis next to the lido pool, which I kept stepping back in when I got too cold in the pool.

Zaandam’s spa, the Greenhouse Spa, also has a whirlpool with jet bubbles, but you do have to pay to get into the spa. But it’s great if you want more privacy.

Orange Party

All HAL ships have an Orange Party, where you dress in your best orange outfit in Crow’s Nest, which will be completely decorated in orange!

Now, why the color orange? That’s because it’s the official color of the Dutch Royal Family, and citizens wear orange to celebrate Koningsdag (King’s Day) in the Netherlands.

Since HAL was founded in 1873 in Rotterdam, all ships pay homage to the Dutch heritage.

The orange party is so much fun, as you can order orange-colored drinks like Aperol Spritz or orange gin and tonics (which is what Cecilio and I ended up getting). The staff also passes out delicious Dutch snacks.

An hour before the Orange Party, you can head to Crow’s Nest to learn how to line dance!

Afternoon Dutch Tea

During sea days at 3 pm, Zaandam (and all HAL ships) serve afternoon Dutch tea in the Main Dining Hall. It’s a popular activity, and we almost didn’t go because the line was too long. Thankfully, it went by really fast, and we didn’t have to share a table with other passengers.

Once you are seated, the staff serve you a tea tier stand with Dutch sandwiches, scones, and sweets such as cream-stuffed stroopwafels, chocoladebol (Dutch cream puffs), appeltaart, boterkoek (butter cake with almond slice), and gevulde koeken (Dutch cookie with marzipan).

Honestly, it’s not much different than English tea; it has its twist with the Dutch treats. I loved how the staff kept the tea flowing, and it was a nice way to keep our stomachs from growling before dinner!

Library and game room

Zaandam has a library right next to the Exploration’s Cafe, where you can rent out any book and return it. It is a small selection of books, but you can take anything that catches your eye. Cecilio and I rented a book and read some of it, but didn’t finish them in time before the cruise ended. So we ended up ordering the books on Amazon.

I LOVED the game room. It was a nice way to kill time during sea days or before dinner. They had puzzles (which I loved doing), chess, checkers, and other games. They also had a daily crossword puzzle from the New York Times that I kept picking up.

Pickleball Court

Pickleball is all the rage, but especially with HAL’s crowd. All ships have a pickleball court, and HAL has a partnership with the Professional Pickleball Association. Cecilio and I aren’t pickleball enthusiasts (especially since he dislocated his shoulder playing badminton in high school eons ago), but it is a fun activity for those who want to stay active and entertained on sea days.

If you’re a beginner, don’t worry, as there are some seasoned players who will help you out. There are even pickleball lessons in the daily agenda!

Kids Club

While HAL ships are catered to an older crowd, we were surprised to see a decent amount of kids and teens on board. Thankfully, there is a Kids Club for those ages 3–17, divided by age groups:

  • Young children (ages 3–6)
  • Tweens (ages 7–11)
  • Teens (ages 12–17)

The Kids Club offers a variety of activities and entertainment to keep the young ones from getting bored (especially when they’d rather be on Disney or Royal Caribbean). This includes arts and crafts, sports, video game tournaments, and themed parties.

Children going to the Kids Club have to be checked in or out by a parent or guardian. They also need to be completely potty-trained and be diaper-free.

Casino

All HAL ships have a casino for those who dream of winning it big! Although I’m not a casino person, I’ve heard that using it gives you a chance of scoring a free cruise, even if you don’t get the big bucks. I’ve got to try that next time, because OF COURSE I want to sail on a free cruise!!!

Spa & Wellness

All HAL ships have the Greenhouse Salon and Spa, where you can get your beauty treatments, a workout, and a spa day. On Zaandam, it’s located on the 8th deck on the lido side.

The salon

The salon offers services such as haircuts, manicures, teeth whitening, waxes, massages, and even Botox and fillers (not that I’d ever get that! No judgment for those who do, though). You do have to pay for these services.

The gym

The gym is included in your fare and has a variety of equipment, including treadmills, bikes, ellipticals, free weights, and weight machines. I will warn you, though, the gym is small and cramped.

They also offer group fitness classes like yoga, Pilates, spin, and bootcamp, but you do have to pay for that, and it’s $20 per class. There is an open area in the gym where the classes are held. You can use that area anytime when there isn’t a class or a presentation.

The fitness center in Holland America Zaandam

I got pretty annoyed with one of the instructors (who was also giving presentations) because she kicked me out while I was doing a barre workout on my laptop with a chair and weights. I tried to be out of the way as much as possible during the presentation, and she still kicked me out, and she wasn’t very nice about it.

I had nowhere else to complete my workout since the whole gym was packed during noon, so I had to go next to the squat machine that had a mirror with a rail that I used as a barre (while bringing the weights and mat). I was cramped in a corner, especially because I was right next to the water station and had to get out of the way for people to refill their water. Oh well. At least I was still able to finish my workout!

You can also avail of services in the gym like personal training and body fat assessments, but you have to pay for those as well.

Thermal Suite

The thermal suite is the highlight of most people’s time onboard, especially since it’s a way to relax from all the walking and exploration on land. There is a row of heated ceramic lounge chairs facing the sea views, a sauna, and a whirlpool with jet bubbles.

The whirlpool was tiny and could probably fit 3 people max. For that reason, I decided it wasn’t worth it to spend money soaking in a jacuzzi smaller than the one in the lido deck.

The day pass to use the thermal suite was $49, but there was also a 3-day pass for $99. While I’d love to lounge on the chairs or sweat in the sauna, I want to primarily soak in the pool and I just felt like spending money for a small pool wasn’t worth it. I saw that some of the newer ships had larger hydrotherapy pools, which I want to try sometime.

Excursions

For Alaska cruises, Holland America Zaandam sails from Vancouver through the Inside Passage, stopping in three cities: Juneau, Skagway, and Ketchikan. She also sails through Glacier Bay National Park, and while you won’t stop there, it’s the best part of the cruise as you’ll see some of the most magnificent glaciers.

Normally, I’d advocate booking tours outside the cruise since it’s cheaper and you’re supporting a local company. But for an Alaska cruise, I’d be more comfortable booking through the ship because the weather can be unpredictable (even though we were lucky we had great weather!). Also, the ship won’t leave anyone behind who booked an excursion through them. Nothing is scarier than being left at port!

But, if you still prefer to book outside the cruise, let me recommend a few tours from each stop.

🚢 Lock in your dream excursions by booking your Alaska cruise today!

Sailing through Glacier Bay National Park

During the middle of the cruise, you’ll have one sea day dedicated to Sailing through Glacier Bay National Park. This was my absolute favorite part of our trip, and seeing the glaciers up close was so special.

You need to get up early (I suggest as early as 6 or 7 am) to catch the best views of the glaciers. Cecilio and I mostly spent our time on the sea view deck (8th deck), but the best views are on the starboard/bow (3rd deck). I’ve heard that the starboard got pretty crowded since the passengers wanted to get up closer to the wildlife. Also, they were serving Dutch pea soup on the starboard.

Crow’s Nest (9th deck) also had viewing areas with rows of chairs facing the window. There was also a park ranger tabling with some information and had a 3D model of the park. If you wanted souvenirs, there was also a mini gift shop.

🚢 You too, can see these otherworldly glaciers by booking your Alaska cruise with Holland America Zaandam!

We didn’t get to see as much wildlife as I wanted. I barely saw a dot of bears from afar. We did see a few whales, but it was mostly their fins. And while I missed it, Cecilio spotted a school of otters. I did get to capture a few seagulls on icebergs with my camera.

Some notable glaciers in the park include Margerie Glacier, Lamplugh Glacier, and John Hopkins Glacier.

Lamplugh Glacier in Glacier Bay National Park, Alaska

If you’re lucky, you might get to see them calving, where large chunks of ice break off the glacier and fall into the water and become icebergs. If the calving is big enough, they sometimes make a loud booming sound!

I got to witness Margerie Glacier calving and snap it on my camera. It was wild!

Calving of Margerie Glacier in Glacier Bay National Park, Alaska

If you’re not a photographer, I suggest getting a pair of binoculars to see wildlife up close. They will sell binoculars on the cruise, but I recommend buying them beforehand since the cruise will upsell them.

But if you’re a beginner photographer, I can’t recommend the Panasonic LUMIX G7 enough. I’ve had it for over 3 years, and I’ve taken it with me all over the world! It’s light, travel-friendly, and easy to use.

To get up close shots of the glaciers and animals, I use the LUMIX G Vario Lens 100—300 mm. It is pretty expensive but SO worth it. For wide landscape shots, I use the G Vario 14—42 mm lens.

Frequently Asked Questions

What’s included in a Holland America Zaandam fare?

When you’re booking a cruise with Holland America Zaandam, there are a lot of dining options included, such as the buffet, main dining hall, Dive in Burger by the lido pool, and 24-hour room service. Also included are entertainment options such as sports (including pickleball), the library and game room, Kids Club, gym, and casino.

Is Holland America Zaandam a good ship?

Zaandam is a solid ship. She’s perfect for those who want to explore Alaska and learn more about its nature, glaciers, and wildlife. She is also a smaller and more intimate ship, which is what some people prefer rather than the megamonsters. Also, all HAL ships get priority in docking spots and sail through Glacier Bay National Park (they are one of the few cruise lines that get to do so, along with Princess, Norwegian, and Cunard).

What nights are formal night in Holland America Zaandam?

For Zaandam’s 7-day Alaska cruise, the formal nights are on the first sea day (the night before arriving in Juneau) and on the day you’re docked in Ketchikan.

Overall thoughts cruising on Holland America Zaandam

What I liked

  • Despite being a small ship, there was so much to do, from games to lectures to art workshops
  • How there were so many wildlife guides and rangers to explain everything going on while sailing through Glacier Bay
  • How most food was included, even room service
  • The port excursions that they offered! Cecilio and I got to go to Glacier Gardens and Mendenhall Glacier in Juneau. I probably would’ve just gone to Mendenhall Glacier and skipped the gardens, though. We also got to ride the White Pass Summit, which was pretty epic and the highlight of our day in Skagway
  • The crew staff were insanely friendly, hospitable, and went above and beyond to make our stay comfortable. I went to the Guest Services desk after checking in to rent a fridge during our whole stay for my weekly Benlysta injections (which need to be refrigerated), and the staff delivered the fridge within a few hours
  • Laundry services. Cecilio and I tried not to pack too much during our 7-day cruise (and extra days before and after in Vancouver), and while you still had to pay per piece, we appreciated that they had that service available
  • The food in the main dining hall and the Dive In Burger was just simply amazing. My mouth is watering over that damn burger
  • How Ocean Bar and Crow’s Nest Bar offered Happy Hour every day for 50% off drinks, which really helped me not spend too much money since we didn’t have the drink package

What I didn’t like

  • Because it’s a small ship, the food options are more limited than they are on a Carnival or Royal Caribbean cruise. You can only have so much of the buffet, and it gets tiring after a while. Because of that, all the passengers congregate in the buffet line
  • The drink dispensers in the buffet were constantly running low, and the coffee machine in Crow’s Nest Bar was broken. It was a shame because they were also a coffee shop and served caffeinated cocktails
  • The fitness instructor who was kinda rude to me in the gym when I was trying to work out in the open area, even though I was trying to get out of the way and get into a corner during her presentation

Would I recommend and sail with Holland America Zaandam again?

If it’s your first time on an Alaska cruise, I can’t recommend Holland America Zaandam enough. All HAL ships are fantastic for Alaska cruises, especially because they are one of the few cruise lines to be able to go inside Glacier Bay National Park. Those glaciers are magnificent, and seeing them is a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

Cruising around Alaska with Holland America Zaandam is also an educational experience, since they host lectures about the glaciers, indigenous people, wildlife, and overall history. When you sail into Glacier Bay, there will be rangers all around the ship to talk about the glaciers and guide you with wildlife spotting.

Sailing on Holland America Zaandam through the Inside Passage also stops in Juneau, Skagway, and Ketchikan, the most visited cities in Southeast Alaska.

Each port stop is unique. Mendenhall Glacier is a must-see in Juneau, followed by dinner at Tracy’s Crab Shack for their gigantic, plump, crab legs. You can’t visit Skagway without riding the White Pass & Yukon Route Railway. And Ketchikan is a cute, walkable town with colorful, historic buildings, salmon shops, and totem poles.

I would love to sail with Holland America again and explore the port stops deeper, with more adventurous activities. But I also want to cruise through other parts of Alaska, like Anchorage.
